Climate change is one of the toughest challenges facing us today, and the Union’s contribution to fighting climate change extends well beyond its borders. The BUDG-CONT joint workshop on international climate finance was a chance to hear from experts about the EU’s financial contribution to the international green transition and the challenges implicit in closing the investment gap in both Member States and third countries.
UK's withdrawal from the EU has resulted in a severe impairment of inter-country cooperation in judicial matters, diminishing the effectiveness of judicial protection, says Adrián VÁZQUEZ LÁZARA, Chair of the Committee on Legal Affairs. The study “Ensuring efficient cooperation with the UK in civil law matters: situation after Brexit and options for future cooperation” aims to analyse many legal gaps left by Brexit and to identify the most affected areas of law
Cohesion policy plays a key role in achieving the EU objectives and meeting its climate commitments, says Younous OMARJEE, Chair of the Committee on Regional Development. A part of that is the Just Transition Fund, set up to help regions heavily relying on coal during the shift to alternatives of this extremely impactful fossil energy. The Committee commissioned a study which analyses the implementation and impact of Cohesion Policy, including Just Transition Funds, in EU coal regions
It is crucial to define the future regulatory framework of the European gas market in the context of Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine, says Cristian-Silviu BUŞOI, Chair of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy. The rapporteurs on the gas directive and gas regulation paved the way for a parliamentary position ahead of the trilogue with the Council. A study on the revision of the third energy package for gas will be presented in ITRE committee on 28 March.
In 2021, 28 million people found themselves in forced labour all over the world. The long lasting EP call for a ban on forced labour was re-echoed in its Resolution of 9 June 2022, followed by a proposal for a regulation, prohibiting products made with forced labour, says Bernd LANGE, Chair of the Committee on International Trade. To address this, the Committee commissioned a study on “Trade-related policy options of a forced labour ban”, which will feed into MEPs legislative work.
Oversight mechanisms of the use of investigative techniques like intrusive surveillance are often weak or ineffective, says Jeroen Lenaers, Chair of the Committee of Inquiry to investigate the use of Pegasus and equivalent surveillance spyware. To address that, PEGA has commissioned a study “The use of Pegasus and equivalent surveillance spyware”. The study examines the legal framework (including oversight and redress) governing the use of Pegasus and equivalent spyware in some Member States.
