Colombia: MEPs to examine progress in countering backlash against women’s rights
A delegation of the Women’s Rights and Gender Equality Committee will be in Bogotá 19-22 June to look into how the gender perspective has been included in the Colombian Peace Agreement.
The delegation, led by Committee Chair Robert Biedroń (S&D, Poland), will examine the progress made in countering the backlash against women’s rights and in implementing the gender perspective in the Colombian Peace Agreement. In addition, they will look into government proposals on the right to abortion, which was de-penalised in February 2022.
MEPs will meet with women's and peacebuilding umbrella organisations to discuss how they are formulating a national action plan on women, peace and security (in line with UN Security Council Resolution 1325). They will hold meetings with representatives of several ministries, members of the Colombian Congressional Women’s Caucus and visit organisations working on prevention, assistance and monitoring of gender-based violence. MEPs will also discuss with representatives of the government and with organisations working on sexual and reproductive health issues and assistance in cases of voluntary interruption of pregnancy. They will exchange views with organisations working to support greater political participation of women in decision-making bodies.
