EU Day for the victims of the global climate crisis (B9-0296/2023)

15-06-2023
Written explanations of vote

I supported this resolution because, in light of the ongoing climate crisis, which incurs increasing human and environmental costs each year, it is crucial to highlight the plight of climate victims and effectively raise awareness about this issue. The resolution proposes cooperation between the Council, the Commission, and the Parliament for an annual 'EU day for the victims of the global climate crisis.' It also suggests joint initiatives to commemorate victims of the global climate crisis in Europe and, through the European External Action Service, worldwide. Additionally, the resolution emphasizes the importance of raising awareness among stakeholders and the general public about concrete steps they can take to prevent these disasters from occurring and better prepare for and respond to climate-related emergencies.

Ukraine’s accession to the Convention of 2 July 2019 on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Judgments in Civil or Commercial Matters (B9-0267/2023)

15-06-2023
Written explanations of vote

I welcomed this resolution as by joining this Convention, Ukraine would benefit from an established legal framework that promotes the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments in civil or commercial matters. This accession would enhance legal certainty, foster international trade and investment, and strengthen Ukraine's integration into the European legal framework. It signifies a significant step towards aligning Ukraine's legal system with international standards, promoting stability, and facilitating cross-border cooperation.

Situation in Nicaragua (RC-B9-0272/2023, B9-0272/2023, B9-0273/2023, B9-0279/2023, B9-0280/2023, B9-0283/2023)

Written explanations of vote

I voted in favor of this resolution because it provides a nuanced analysis and a comprehensive action plan regarding the human rights situation in Nicaragua. Since 2018, the Nicaraguan regime has systematically and arbitrarily incarcerated, harassed and intimidated presidential pre-candidates, opposition leaders and religious leaders, as well as student and rural leaders, indigenous people, LGBTI persons, journalists, human rights defenders, civil society organizations, business representatives and all other critical voices in the country. As the situation in the country continues to deteriorate, this resolution calls to include Nicaraguan judges and prosecutors on the EU sanctions list, as well as expanding the list to include Daniel Ortega and his inner circle. The imposition of such restrictive measures is critical to penalize and discourage future human rights violations in Nicaragua.
