Missions

A committee can decide to organise missions to a member state, a country outside of the EU or to international conferences. Missions are undertaken in the exercise of the powers conferred on the committee and are composed of a limited numbers of members of the committee. Committees may also send, for no more than three days, a three-member delegation to agencies for which they are principally responsible. To investigate the issues raised by several petitioners on the management and protection of the brown bear population and the illegal logging in Romania, a group of eight MEPs visited Bucharest, Sfântu Gheorghe and Suceava in Romania, between 15 and 18 of May.

A delegation of members of the Committee on Petitions conducted a Fact-Finding-Visit to Germany from 3 to 4 November, 2022. Many petitions submitted to the Committee concern cross-border family matters and the mission enabled Members to gain a better understanding of the German judicial system and the role of the “Jugendamt” (Youth Welfare Office) on these issues.

Natura 2000

From 19 to 21 September 2022 the Petitions committee conducted a Fact-finding visit to Poland to follow-up on petitions concerning breaches of EU environmental law, putting at risk the primeval forest in Bialowieża protected under Natura 2000, and to follow-up on petitions on access to education for disabled pupils in Poland.

A delegation of the PETI Committee went to Washington DC from 18 to 22 July, to raise awareness and discuss the impact of the US Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) on EU citizens and to have exchanges of views with tax officials, Senators and Representatives in Congress and stakeholders, to find concrete solutions for the problems of the numerous EU citizens and their family members impacted by the extraterritorial application of citizenship-based taxation.

The Committee on Petitions organised a Fact-Finding visit to the Hauts de France region to acquire first hand knowledge of the challenging security and safety situation of truck drivers, who have become victims of organised crime engaged in cargo theft and human trafficking, often combined with violence towards drivers who are also at risk of fuel theft, armed robberies and intrusions.

A Fact-finding visit to Palma de Mallorca, Baleares (Spain) took place on 11 to 13 April concerning several petitions on alleged mistreatment of minors under foster care in Mallorca. On their first day, the delegation of the Committee on Petitions met the petitioners, families of the victims, journalists and political representatives at the regional level.

A Fact-finding visit to Mar Menor, Murcia (Spain) took place on 23 to 25 February concerning several petitions on the deterioration of the natural space of Mar Menor. On their first day, the delegation of the Committee on Petitions met the petitioners, political representatives at the national, regional and local levels.

A Fact-finding visit to Spain took place on 3 to 5 November, concerning a petition reporting that there are still 379 unsolved murders committed by the terrorist group ETA. On their first day, the delegation of the Committee on Petitions visited the Memorial Centre for the Victims of Terrorism in Vitoria (Basque Country).

The Committee on Petitions organised a fact-finding visit to Bulgaria in the period 24-26 February 2020. In the first part, the members of the delegation met petitioners in Sofia along with the responsible state authorities, professional associations, consumer protection organizations and the Bulgarian Ombudsman to discuss issues related to the banking system and private enforcement agents.
