External threats and attacks to European democracies have increased over the last decade. These external actors aim to exploit the vulnerabilities of our open societies, to undermine confidence in our institutions and in public discourse, and ultimately to weaken democracies.
Ahead of the 2019 European elections, the European Parliament has stepped up in its role against foreign interference and disinformation, and decided on 18 June 2020 to set up a Special Committee on Foreign Interference in all Democratic Processes in the European Union, including Disinformation (INGE). Following 50 hearings with over 130 experts, on 9 March 2022 the plenary of the European Parliament adopted the Resolution of the Special Committee by 552 votes in favor, 81 votes against and 60 abstentions. And one day later, on 10 March, the plenary adopted the mandate for a new Special Committee (ING2) by an overwhelming majority, with 614 votes in favor, 42 against and 34 abstentions. The new Special Committee has a 12 months mandate and is vested with the responsibilities to follow-up on the INGE 1 report.
