The common fisheries policy (CFP) is one of the EU’s most integrated policies. Its aim is to make sure that fisheries are managed sustainably. The preservation of fisheries resources and marine environments must go hand in hand with both socio-economic balance for communities in coastal regions and the EU’s food security. We in the Committee on Fisheries bear this very much in mind in our work. Our priorities for the second half of our mandate will be the Fisheries Control Regulation, tackling illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and the answer to the Commission’s Fisheries policy package adopted on 21 February 2023.

In 2023, the committee will discuss the implementation of the CFP to establish what is working well, and which areas require more work. The question we need to be asking is whether the CFP currently has the tools it needs to tackle the climate and biodiversity challenges it is facing, both now and in the future.

We need a CFP that can live up to the ambitions set out in the Green Deal - and we are working on it!
